Apparently I was on the tour of bridges in the South of France. After visiting modern Millau Viaduct I went to the aqueduct Pont du Gard, constructed by Roman Empire more than 2000 years ago. This ancient masterpiece of engineering is worth a visit if you are traveling through the region.
Location: South of France, between cities of Avignon and Nîmes, on the river Gardon. It was easy to find Pont du Gard, since there are indications on the highway and throughout the road towards it.I like to have panoramic views of the sites, so here I climbed a steep hill full of bushes. The picture was worth the effort. Aqueduct was built on three levels. The bridge is 49 m (161 ft) high above the river and 274 m (899 ft) long.The Pont du Gard was constructed in order to bring spring water to the city of Nîmes around the year 19 BC. Nowadays it is a popular tourist destination, open air museum, place of events and UNESCO’s World Heritage Site.By the time of sunset (and time of dinner) go to the “Les Terrasses” restaurant with a gorgeous view over the aqueduct and river. It is a Mediterranean restaurant with local flavors. In peak season you might need to make a reservation before dining.After the sunset, when it gets dark, starts a video-mapping projection. I wasn’t really impressed by the show, but it is a good entertainment for the kids. The Pont du Gard is a nice place to come and spend with the family, have a picnic here or go for a swim.
