Panama Canal

The Panama Canal Visit

I skipped visit of the canal on my first trip to Panama, but on the second one I finally visited it. The Panama Canal is a fascinating wonder of engineering that has connected the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans since it opened in 1914. And this canal provides a vital shortcut for global shipping routes. It is also a popular destination for visitors from all over the world who want to witness the fascinating process of ships passing through the canal. So how does it work and where is better to see the ships passing by?

Miraflores Locks of The Panama Canal

One of the best places to witness the canal’s operation is the Miraflores locks, which provide an up-close view of ships passing through the narrow canal. Here in the visitor center you can learn about the history and technology of the canal. The center has interactive exhibits that explain the canal’s construction and operation, as well as its impact on global trade. You can also watch a short film that gives an overview of the canal’s history and significance. Unfortunately, during my visit, the exhibit was closed for reconstruction.

In addition to the visitor center, there is a lookout point where you can watch ships passing through the locks up close. The view from the lookout is breathtaking, and it’s a great place to take photos and soak in the awe-inspiring scenery. The only downside is that all the tourists seem to like this spot, so it’s really crowded. Also, I didn’t like the commentator who was making annoying jokes, talking non-stop, and laughing to himself.

Ardmore Exporter passing through the canal

I was watching the ships Dimitris C and Ardmore Exporter pass through the canal at the time of my visit. The sheer size of these ships is staggering, and it’s hard to imagine how they could navigate through the narrow locks. But the precision and efficiency of the canal’s operation is a testament to the ingenuity of the engineers who designed it.

So, if you are planning a visit to the Miraflores locks, I recommend bringing a pair of earplugs to help tune out any annoying commentary. Additionally, it’s worth checking ahead to see if the visitor center is open so that you can take advantage of the educational exhibits and displays that explain the history and significance of the canal.
