Introduction
After spending a few memorable days in Porto, it was time to head south to Lisbon, Portugal’s vibrant capital. This trip was full of firsts for me – my first time in Portugal and my first experience on the Alfa Pendular train, a high-speed service operated by Comboios de Portugal (CP). What makes the Alfa Pendular unique is its tilting technology, which allows the train to lean into curves, maintaining high speeds even on winding tracks without sacrificing passenger comfort. This innovation, along with the first-class Conforto cabin I traveled in, made the experience even more enjoyable, so I decided to share my review of the journey.
Portugal’s Railway system
Portugal’s railway system is both reliable and scenic, making train travel one of the most enjoyable ways to explore the country. The Alfa Pendular is the crown jewel of CP’s high-speed network, connecting major cities like Porto, Lisbon, Faro, Braga, and Coimbra.
One of the key features that sets the Alfa Pendular apart is its advanced tilting technology. This system allows the train to lean into curves, enabling it to maintain speeds of up to 220 km/h (137 mph) even on winding tracks. The result is a smoother, faster ride without the usual discomfort of high-speed rail travel through hilly or curvy terrain. With Portugal’s stunning coastal views and picturesque landscapes, the Alfa Pendular offers not just transport, but an experience in itself.
This train service runs frequently throughout the day, providing both speed and comfort, and is well-regarded for its punctuality and efficiency. It’s an excellent option for both tourists and locals looking to explore Portugal’s major cities without the hassle of airport transfers and long security lines. The journey from Porto to Lisbon, for example, takes roughly 2 hours and 45 minutes, making it faster than a car trip and much more relaxing.
Two classes of service
Alfa Pendular offers two classes of service: Conforto (first class) and Turística (second class), catering to different types of travelers. For my trip from Porto to Lisbon, I chose to travel in Conforto. First-class tickets are priced at €47.40, while second-class tickets are more budget-friendly at €33.90.
The Conforto class
The first-class cabin offers a premium travel experience with several perks that make it well worth the additional cost. The seating layout in Conforto is 2 by 1, meaning there are two seats on one side of the aisle and just one on the other. This arrangement offers more space and privacy compared to the 2 by 2 seating in Turística (second class). The seats are wide and well-padded, with ample legroom that makes the ride much more comfortable, especially for longer journeys. The seats also recline and have footrests, allowing you to stretch out and relax. One feature I particularly appreciated was the quiet atmosphere in the first-class cabin, perfect for resting or getting some work done.
Passengers traveling in Conforto also enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi, which worked reliably for most of the journey. There are power outlets at some seats, making it convenient for charging devices. Additionally, there are personal reading lights and folding tables, which are handy for those wanting to work, read, or enjoy a meal during the trip.
Turística class
While I didn’t travel in Turística, it’s worth noting that second-class also offers a comfortable experience, but with fewer amenities. The seats are slightly narrower, and the legroom is reduced compared to Conforto. Wi-Fi is available in both classes, though some reviews suggest the connection is more stable in first class. If you’re on a budget, Turística still provides a pleasant journey without sacrificing comfort.
Final Thoughts
Overall, my trip on the Alfa Pendular from Porto to Lisbon was a smooth and enjoyable experience. The first-class Conforto cabin offers excellent value for travelers seeking comfort, convenience, and a little extra luxury. Whether you’re in Portugal for business or leisure, the Alfa Pendular is an efficient and scenic way to travel between cities. For those on a tighter budget, second-class still offers a good experience, but if you can splurge, Conforto is well worth the extra cost.
If you’re planning to explore Portugal by rail, the Alfa Pendular should be on your list – it’s fast, comfortable, and a great way to see more of this beautiful country while avoiding the stress of airports and road traffic.
