Introduction
Dubai is a city of contrasts, where the modern meets the traditional, and the desert meets the sea. Having lived in the United Arab Emirates from 2013 to 2016, I couldn’t resist the allure of a long stopover in Dubai while flying with Emirates Airlines. This 35-hour layover was more than just a quick stop – it was a chance to reconnect with friends and see the ever-evolving cityscape.
I usually don’t recommend people to visit the UAE during the summer because it’s very hot, sometimes reaching up to 47°C (116°F). During my stay, the temperature was a comparatively mild 37°C (99°F). Despite the heat, I was eager to revisit a place that holds so many memories.
Here’s a rundown of how I spent my brief but memorable stay in Dubai, with tips and highlights for fellow travelers.
1st hour in Dubai: Navigating Airport
After landing, my first priority was getting through immigration and picking up my luggage. Since I had bought an eSIM before the trip, I didn’t need to worry about getting a local SIM card on arrival. This pre-trip purchase saved me time and ensured I stayed connected throughout my stay. One of my top tips for navigating Dubai efficiently is to rent a car. The city is built for driving, and having your own vehicle offers flexibility, saves time compared to public transport, and is more economical than relying on taxis.
Hour 2: Sunrise Over the Palm
Arriving early in the morning, I headed straight to catch the sunrise at 6 AM. Out of several iconic locations, I chose the Palm Tower instead of my usual go-to place, the Burj Khalifa. While the Burj Khalifa is the tallest building in the world, standing at 828 meters (2,717 feet), I’ve been there many times before. The Palm Tower offers a different perspective, with panoramic views of the iconic Palm Jumeirah, a man-made archipelago shaped like a palm tree. Watching the sunrise over this engineering marvel was an unforgettable experience.
Hour 4: Checking In
Four hours into my stopover, I checked into the Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach at 8 in the morning. To my pleasant surprise, the room was ready, which was unexpected given the early arrival time. Summer is the low season in Dubai, which means fewer crowds and more affordable rates. After a quick breakfast, I headed to the pool. Even with the heat it was a refreshing way to relax after the flight, though the pool water was far from cool.
Hour 8: A Reunion and the Dubai Mall
By the eighth hour, it was time to meet up with friends. We grabbed a quick lunch before heading to the Dubai Mall, one of the largest shopping malls in the world, covering over 1.1 million square meters (12 million square feet). The Dubai Mall is more than just a shopping destination; it’s a hub of entertainment and leisure. From the vast array of dining options to the immersive aquarium and underwater zoo, the mall has something for everyone. When I lived in Dubai, I often spent my entire day off inside the mall, indulging in everything from video games and movies to shopping and window shopping.
For a unique experience, I also recommend checking out Ski Dubai, the indoor ski resort inside the Mall of the Emirates. It’s a surreal experience to ski in the middle of the desert and a perfect escape from the heat.
Hour 14: Evening Entertainment
As the evening approached, I made my way to the Dubai Fountain show, located outside the Dubai Mall. This choreographed water spectacle runs every 30 minutes in the evening, and it never fails to amaze. The Dubai Fountain is the world’s largest choreographed fountain system, with jets of water shooting up to 150 meters (490 feet) in the air, set to music and lights. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting Dubai, and it was the perfect way to cap off my day.
Hour 17: A Quiet Night In
After a busy day, I returned to my hotel room, ordered room service, and relaxed. Sometimes, the best part of a trip is simply unwinding and reflecting on the day’s adventures. At 10 PM I was ready to call it a night.
Hour 28: Breakfast and Pool Time
I woke up at 8 AM, refreshed and ready to make the most of my remaining time. The buffet breakfast at Sofitel was excellent, offering a variety of options to suit all tastes. Afterward, I enjoyed another dip in the pool before packing up.
Hour 32: Departure
By the 32nd hour, I was back at Dubai International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world. The airport itself is a destination, with world-class lounges, extensive shopping, and dining options. Whether you’re looking for luxury goods or last-minute souvenirs, the duty-free shopping at Dubai Airport is unparalleled.
Hour 35: Farewell Dubai
As my plane pushed back from the gate, I couldn’t help but feel a nostalgia. Dubai is a city that never stands still, constantly evolving and growing. My 35-hour stopover was a whirlwind of activities, yet it felt like just a glimpse into the endless experiences the city has to offer. Until next time, Dubai – thank you for the memories.
