More than ten years ago I was watching documentaries on National Geographic about this bridge and I was amazed by its architecture. At that time I couldn’t imagine that I will ever visit this site, since it’s located deep inside the French countryside. Here I am in 2018 driving towards The Millau Viaduct, tallest bridge in the world to date.
The route: I took high speed train from Paris to the city Montpellier in the south of the country. From there to the Millau Viaduct journey takes around one hour by car. Length of the Millau Viaduct is 2,460 meters (8,070 ft). It is suspended with its cables high above the valley and when you drive through it, you will feel as if you are between sky and earth. Design of the structure reminds me of a huge sailing boat or a mega yacht. Makes sense, because down there, is river Tarn, crossed by the bridge. The Millau Viaduct holds the world record for the tallest bridge to date. It soars at 343 metres (1,125.3 ft) above the base, which is higher than the Eiffel Tower. There are only 7 pylons that are holding all the structure in the air. The best panoramic viewing point of the bridge is a short climb away from the tourist information center. From the road A75 exit 45 or from D911 sign “Aire du Viaduc”. Viaduct was built with concrete and steel over the period of 3 years and opened on December 2004. Construction cost is almost € 400 millions. I slept a night in a real castle in Millau with a view over the viaduct and the town. One of the best experiences so far, considering I had never stayed in a castle before. Shot from the hotel’s balcony. Millau is a cute little town worth a visit, especially when you are passing through the area. I really appreciate such places in France for their charm and gastronomic experience.
